가나아트는 아시아아트센터와 함께 대만의 현대 조각가 리첸(李真, b. 1963)의 개인전, 《Li Chen: A New Eastern Spirit—Genuine and Otherworldly》을 개최한다.

전시는 〈Energy of Emptiness(虛空中的能量)〉, 〈Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether(大氣神遊)〉, 〈Ordinary People(凡夫)〉, 〈Ethereal Cloud(青煙)〉 등 대표작을 비롯해 최근작 〈Celestial Manuscripts(天文)〉까지, 1999년부터 2025년에 이르는 리첸의 작업을 선별하여 선보인다.

Gana Art presents Li Chen: A New Eastern Spirit—Genuine and Otherworldly, a solo exhibition by the Taiwanese contemporary sculptor Li Chen (李真, b. 1963), in collaboration with Asia Art Center. Working with heavy materials such as bronze, Li Chen creates rounded, ink-black sculptural forms that appear weightless, as if floating. His sculptural language is distinctive: it neither stays bound to tradition nor simply adopts Western forms. He has held solo exhibitions at the 52nd Venice Biennale, the National Art Museum of China, the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and the Frye Art Museum, among others. His work is held in the collections of major institutions worldwide, including the Musée Cernuschi, the Olenska Foundation, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and the Taichung Art Museum. In 2025, the French art publisher Cercle d’Art released a monograph on his work, in recognition of his influence on contemporary sculpture.

The exhibition presents a selection of Li Chen’s representative works from 1999 to 2025, including the Energy of Emptiness, Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether, Ordinary People, and Ethereal Cloud series, as well as his most recent series, Celestial Manuscripts. For Li, making sculpture is not simply a matter of carving a mass into form but of working with the flow of qi (氣), or vital energy. In pursuit of qiyun shengdong (氣韻生動), a state in which a form is animated by qi as if alive and in motion, he reduces linear elements and centers his work on the flow of repeated, undulating surfaces. Although cast in bronze, his volumes swell as if expanding from within and take on a lightness, as though filled with air or energy.

‘New Eastern Spirit,’ the exhibition’s title, speaks to Li Chen’s artistic journey of drawing from the deep well of classical tradition and renewing it for the contemporary moment. His work stands within the tradition of Eastern sculpture in that it constructs a spiritual space by way of traditional Eastern iconography. Yet it does not remain within tradition and instead engages with the currents of contemporary art. For Li, the ‘New Eastern Spirit’ is a process of bringing ancient Eastern thought into new contemporary forms and setting the old and the new in dialogue. It is also an attitude he has maintained throughout his career. As his first solo presentation in Korea, the exhibition offers a broad view of his aesthetics and artistic path, and invites Korean audiences to take their first step into that journey.
