SPACE 97

The history of art education that began in Chicago in 1866 forms a new point of intersection in Seoul today, 160 years later. Marking the 160th anniversary of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), CROSSING 1866 traces how learning at SAIC has crossed borders, cultures, generations, and media, expanding into diverse artistic practices.

The exhibition begins with the journey of Yim Yongryun (Yim Phah), SAIC’s first Korean student. Following the March First Movement, he reached Chicago via China, studied at SAIC, and continued his education at Yale University and in Paris. Upon returning to Korea, he taught younger artists, including Lee Jungseop, at Osan School. Over the next century, generations of Korean artists studied at SAIC. While Yim’s journey unfolded amid colonial oppression and displacement, later artists’ journeys involve intertwined experiences of study abroad, migration, settlement, and return. Rather than defining them by a single diasporic identity, the exhibition explores how these varied experiences find expression in individual perspectives and artistic languages.

For these artists, SAIC was an open space for inquiry rather than a fixed center imparting a particular style. Its tradition as a school founded by artists, its educational environment combining museum and school, and Chicago’s intersecting histories of architecture and immigration enabled ongoing questioning and experimentation. Works spanning fine art, design, and new media reveal how shared learning led to distinct artistic practices.

CROSSING 1866 explores the traces left by learning and movement in works across generations and will become a point of departure for crossing new boundaries.
