DROPS

GANA ART NAMSAN

Gana Art Namsan presents DROPS featuring Kim Tschang-Yeul (1929–2021) and Byun Seung Hoon (1955–). The exhibition brings together the narrative embedded in Kim’s early Waterdrops paintings and the breath of emptiness embodied in Byun’s ceramics, creating a single contemplative space in which light and clay resonate with one another. At the entrance, Kim’s shimmering Waterdrops series opens the space with its luminous presence, while to the left, Byun’s Mandala Moon Jar anchors the room with the elemental force of earth and fire. Through these juxtapositions, the exhibition reflects how each artist has used their essential materials to heal life’s wounds and confront the essence of existence.

Kim Tschang-Yeul was an artist who engaged with the world through the waterdrop for over fifty years, a motif that shaped his art world. Yet for Kim, the waterdrop was never merely a beautiful natural form but a vessel of memory and trauma. The Korean War had forced him to abandon his studies, and he witnessed the deaths of many friends. For the artist, the waterdrop became a bullet wound, a tear, and a purifying, almost requiem-like presence that sought to wash away the residue of survival and guilt. In dialogue with Kim’s practice stands Korean ceramic artist Byun Seung Hoon, who has long explored the “aesthetics of emptiness” through the harmonies created by earth, fire, water, and wind. Byun’s Mandala Moon Jar draws from the symbolic legacy of the Joseon-era white porcelain moon jar yet expands through a contemporary sensibility. Unlike the traditional method, he constructs each vessel using the coiling technique, stacking clay strip by strip to form the body. The resulting form that intentionally releasing the pursuit of perfect symmetry carries a gentle looseness, allowing the warmth of the artist’s gesture to remain visible on the surface. In this way, DROPS becomes a quiet encounter between a drop of light and a handful of clay, showing how the simplest forms of existence, when shaped by human hands and memory, can heal, replenish, and open space for reflection.
