가나아트는 손가락을 사용해 추상화면을 구축하는, 박영남(朴英男, b.1949-)의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 ‘흑백 회화’로 대중에 각인된 작가의 잠재되어 있던 다채로운 색의 표현이 담긴 신작, <Monet before Me> 연작을 공개하는 자리가 될 것이다.
<Monet before Me> 연작은 2016년부터 시작한 드로잉 작업에서 출발했다. 흑백 작업을 주로 하던 그는 판화지 위에 파스텔과 물감을 둥글리며, 종이 위에서 다양한 색이 섞이고 만들어지는 과정을 실험했다. 그리고 이를 미완성인 채로 화실 벽에 세워져 있던 작품 위에 옮겼다. 그것이 <Monet before Me> 연작의 시작이었다. <Landscape against Blue Sky>와 같은 이전 작품에서도 흑백 외의 색을 사용한 적이 있으나, 이는 캔버스를 분할하는 선인 그리드(grid)에 의해 구획되어 규칙적이면서도 기하학적인 패턴의 일부로서 존재했다.
그러나 신작 속 그리드는 뭉개지고, 색면 간의 경계는 무너져 서로 간섭한다. 유기체가 부유하듯 생동하는 무정형의 형태들 가운데, 자연의 빛이 색채로써 피어난다. 박영남의 그림은 그리드와 흑백이라는 형식적 제한에서 벗어나 더욱 자유로이 진화하고 있는 것이다. 그렇기에 흑백 회화와 드로잉, 신작이 함께 구성된 본 전시는 <Monet before Me>가 탄생하기까지의 여정에 대한 시각적 도해가 될 것이다.

Gana Art is pleased to present new works by Park Yungnam who uses his fingers to build an abstract picture-plane. The exhibition will reveal a new, Monet Before Me series of works with the multi-colorful expressions by the artist imprinted on the public with black and white paintings.
Monet Before Me series started from the artist’s drawings in 2016, rolling of stumps of pastels on printmaking paper. He experimented with the process of mixing and making various colors on paper. And the artist shifted the harmony of the colors in drawing onto the painting unfinished that had been erected on the wall of the studio. That was the beginning of the Monet Before Me. Colors other than black and white were used in previous works such as Landscape against Blue Sky, but this existed as part of a regular yet geometric pattern, divided by the grid, a line that splits the canvas.
However, the grid in the new works is crushed, and the boundary between the colors collapses and interrupts each other. Of the amorphous forms of living organisms vibrating with life, the natural light shines as a color. Park’s paintings are evolving more freely, breaking away from the formal limitations of grids and color. The exhibition will feature a series of black and white paintings, drawings, and new works. It will be a visual illustration of the journey to the birth of Monet before Me.
